My Birthday, Soccer Fun, RAW Questions, and Legacy Lens Lust

Today’s my birthday! Annnnndddd that aside, now on to the rest of my thoughts from today and yesterday.

I really, really enjoy photography; like competing in athletics, it makes me feel good. So, after I finished the first day back at FSU, I didn’t have to work, and I’m not working out until Friday because I’ve been sick and want to make sure I am 100% better. So with no collegiate athletics happening here in town, I decided to go to the men’s Leon v Wakulla soccer match. Those photos are here:

Also…RAW…I’ve been experimenting with shooting in RAW only, because I know there are a variety of reasons to do it. However, I’ve been looking at the files, and they are HUGE when I’m importing them, but as soon as I edit them, they drop exponentially in size – like from 28 mbs, to between 4 and 10. That, and the fact that the files are less “poppy” than the JPEGs, even after I edit them. On the other hand, the noise appears to be slightly less noticeable.

The only other big thing I’ve been thinking about over the last couple days, is legacy lenses. Cool manual focus fast primes from the 70s and 80s are highly desirable, but picking a reasonably priced on is challenging…in addition, I’m worried about focusing with the smaller, dimmer, pentamirror viewfinder in/on my D5200. That being said, I really want something like a 50mm f/1.2 AI-S, or a 105mm f/1.8 AI-S…But the “coolness” factor of these lenses is almost outweighed by the practicality of a modern AF-S lens that costs a similar amount, like the 50mm f/1.8 AF-S, or the 85mm f/1.8 AF-S…More to come after I get my refund back from FSU.
